R is for Ruby: Ruby Mendez-Swenson at Pirate

My 4-year-old daughter comes up behind me in my studio and puts a cheap gold beaded costume necklace around my neck like it’s an Olympic gold medal, and announces, “Mom, you are a good artist!” Nothing else in my life has ever felt so validating.

She loves to create her own pieces of art. When we work together on creating, she tells me the story of the characters in her works as she is making them. Ruby is very interested in trying new mediums and tools to make art, however she always returns to her two favorite mediums: acrylic paint on paper, and digital painting. Recently, she has been adding elements of collage to her pictures, focusing on animals and insects.

Ruby is very excited to share her latest works in her first ever exhibition. Her solo exhibition, R is for Ruby, opens at Pirate: Contemporary Art on February 9th, 2024 and runs through February 25th, 2024.
